Today, Monday 23 September, marks International Day of Sign Languages, emphasising the vital role of sign languages worldwide and the importance of sign languages like Auslan in enabling Deaf Australians to fully engage in society. It is part of the International Week of Deaf People, a global event celebrating the rights, culture, and languages of Deaf communities.
This week raises awareness of the need for greater inclusivity and support for Deaf people, highlighting the unique contributions of sign language users around the world.
With over 20,000 Australians using Auslan as their primary language, AFCA recognises the importance of providing clear and accessible information to everyone, regardless of communication style. AFCA is now offering a range of resources in Auslan to help people better understand their options when it comes to resolving complaints about financial products and services.
This initiative is part of AFCA’s ongoing commitment to accessibility, specifically catering to the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
“We acknowledge and celebrate Auslan as a unique language and are excited to add it to our growing list of translated resources, which now includes 21 languages” said David Locke, Chief Ombudsman and Chief Executive Officer. “AFCA already works closely with Auslan interpreters, and these videos expand our range of resources for the community.” he continued.
The new Auslan videos provide information about how AFCA helps people to resolve financial complaints and includes a case study drawn from our experience that demonstrates the types of outcomes the financial ombudsman can achieve.
Whether through Auslan, written or phone communication, AFCA wants to ensure that everyone can connect with us in the way that suits them best.
AFCA's latest step forward reflects an ongoing mission to represent, respect, and celebrate the diversity of the communities we serve. AFCA encourages anyone facing unresolved financial complaints to reach out and explore the communication options available.
